The Wildebeest, also known as the Gnu, is an even-toed horned ungulate closely related to the antelope. It is native to Africa and lives mainly on the arid plains of the Serengeti Desert.
The Wildebeest can grow to 1.4 meters at the shoulder, can live for 20 years, and during the mating season it generally achieves one of the highest rates of successful impregnation among all mammals. While normally a docile herbivore content to graze and sleep for weeks on end, Wildebeest stampedes are renowned for causing massive amounts of destruction. They often involve around 500 animals charging at speeds of 55 kilometers per hour for 30 minutes or more, and generally result in the complete obliteration of everything in their path.
